I found this page looking for the answer to that question as well. Hopefully someone will be able to guide us. How long have you been practicing?

Hello,
Le Mat symbolise a pelerine, someone who is doing a quest.
Reversed, it means a fool, someone who is turning around with no goal.
The original French Tarot of Marseille does not use the word “The Fool”, originally the name is “Le Mat”.
Best regards,
Alexandre

Alejandro Jodorowsky suggests in La Voie du Tarot, that we note the card from which Le Mat departs or the card to which Le Mat walks towards-- provided one is placing the cards linearly.
This can provide us clues as to how Le Mat symbolizes the ending of something prior and walking into the unknown, or perhaps a beginning that is pregnant with possibility. |
